NAUTICAL Star, trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by Raddesh Roman, put on a show in the $1.25-million St Catherine Cup at Caymanas Park, winning by 10 3/4 lengths in the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over six furlongs (1,200m) on Saturday.
The six-year-old, American-bred, dark bay/brown horse Nautical Star clocked a time of 1:11.2 (23.4 x 47.1 x 58.4), beating Champion Bubbler (Tevin Foster) and Mark My Identity (Dane Dawkins) in the process.
At the off, Nautical Star quickly took control of the race and asserted his dominance. He increased his advantage going into the half-mile (800m) turn and was long gone by the time the field turned for home, securing his first win on local soil and his first since 2023.
Nautical Star’s victory is a demonstration of his pure class and raw talent, and it was clear that he was seeking redemption after a disappointing performance as the favourite in last year’s Mouttet Mile.
It was the second winner on the eight-race card for Roman who also won aboard Last Possession for trainer Anthony Dixon in the day’s fifth race.
No trainer had more than one winner on the day.
Racing continues on Saturday.
