A total of $430.8 million has been budgeted for the upcoming fiscal year to continue school rehabilitation and infrastructure upgrade initiatives, which are being implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).
The work will be carried out under the ‘School Infrastructure Improvement Project’, which seeks to reduce poverty in low-income, vulnerable communities by improving access to quality education and training.
Details of the project are outlined in the 2026/27 Estimates of Expenditure, recently tabled in the House of Representatives by Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Fayval Williams.
For fiscal year 2026/27, the project aims to continue rehabilitation and construction works at Mount Moriah, Pisgah, and Mount Salem Primary Schools to achieve practical completion, as well as commence and complete the procurement of equipment for the Mount Salem and Mount Moriah schools.
Achievements up to December 2025 include construction works at Mount Moriah Primary School, which reached 65 per cent completion; rehabilitation of Mount Salem Primary and Pisgah Primary Schools, attaining completion rates of 35 per cent and 80 per cent, respectively.
In addition, Kendal Primary School achieved practical completion, and teachers along with community members were certified in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) techniques.
The project, which commenced in December 2021, is now slated to conclude in August 2026 following an extension of the initiative.
It is jointly funded by the Government of Jamaica and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
