Reggae and dancehall artiste Frassdon has officially changed his stage name to Sovereignty, marking a decisive shift from dancehall’s street and nightlife culture towards conscious roots reggae.
The artiste said that ‘Frassdon’ represented an earlier chapter of youthful energy, while Sovereignty reflects his growth into manhood, spiritual awareness and purposeful creativity.
“The name Sovereignty represents self-rule, spiritual autonomy and reclaiming divine authority over one’s mind, body and destiny,” he explained. Sovereignty is now preparing to release his 16-track roots-reggae album, Wake Up Call, later this year 2026. The project will be led by his previously released single, We Are, with two additional singles planned.
Produced in collaboration with Bylavibe Production and Studio Yard Music, the album blends contemporary roots-reggae with live horns, organic drum patterns, traditional percussion and heavy basslines. Its central themes include resilience, truth, love, spiritual awareness and community empowerment.
“Dancehall provided foundational training in rhythm, cadence and crowd control, but roots reggae offers the depth and space needed for social commentary, spiritual elevation and lasting messages,” Sovereignty said.
Wake Up Call will also feature a collaboration with roots-reggae artiste Loyal Flames, along with an emerging voice from the current cultural revival. The independently released project is expected to receive global digital distribution, accompanied by a limited vinyl pressing for roots reggae collectors and sound systems.
Although his musical direction has changed, Sovereignty said longtime supporters will still recognise the sharp delivery, vocal grit and rhythmic precision associated with his previous moniker.
“The edge remains intact, but the energy is now being redirected towards social uplift, conscious reflection and substance,” he said.
Through this transition, Sovereignty hopes to establish himself as a timeless voice in modern conscious reggae while contributing to the continued preservation and advancement of authentic roots music worldwide.
