Veteran dancehall artiste Immperial Alley Cat is giving praises to the Almighty on his latest single, ‘God is Great’.
Speaking with THE STAR, the entertainer said he was inspired to write the song following a series of reflection sessions on his past.
“I have had so many ups and downs, but then I just had to remember that God has blessed me with the gift of music and He blessed me with a great family and support system, especially during dark times. I just have to say that God is great to me so I just sat and wrote the lyrics,” he said.
According to the entertainer, as he wrote the lyrics, his thoughts were haunted with memories of two near-death experiences. He said God is Great is wholeheartedly directed at the Almighty who he emphasised has never left his side, including when he walked away from a serious car accident in Jamaica.
“I was coming from a show and some animal run out in the road and I swerved and almost went over a bridge. When I turned away from it, I went back in the road and another vehicle slammed into my vehicle,” the deejay said. In another incident, he was returning from the rural areas when the driver of the vehicle fell asleep at the wheel.
“We almost went over a precipice. I grabbed the wheel and it didn’t happen. He (the other driver) then told me that I would have to take over the driving back to Kingston and it was my first time driving a big vehicle like that. There are so many other times when God has spared my life and I am just thankful,” he added.
So far, the deejay said the song has been receiving steady rotation and this, he believes, has much to do with its message of hope and the fact that it attracts listeners of all age groups.
“I know the first audience that the song is going to attract are the Christians as it can be played or sung in the church halls. But this song is for absolutely everyone and anyone who has gone through struggles and God has taken them out of it. I just can’t stop giving thanks because I have been through things in this music industry that should have made me stop doing music, but God has taught me even how to build riddims and so on,” Immperial Alley Cat said.
