The two-day Purewater/JC/R. Danny Williams Track and Field Development meet is scheduled to get under way today at the Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College, with action in the discus and javelin events highlighting the opening day of competition.

Ian Forbes, one of the organisers of the meet, said that the 200 metres will also be contested this afternoon as athletes begin two days of intense competition.

“Everything is in place for the event because we have received more than 2,000 entries, and, of course, you know that we have a wide range of events, both track events and field events,” said Forbes. “The discus and javelin events will take place on Friday afternoon at Jamaica College, and this is primarily for safety purposes, when the facility and field is not as populated as it would normally be to ensure that it is done in a safe environment.”

He also added that the triple jump events would be staged on today’s first day of competition.

“There will be some 200 metres events on Friday afternoon as well as a triple jump. On Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., all systems go again for the major part of the meet. There will be the 100 metres, there will be sprint hurdles, the 400 metres hurdles, 5,000 metres, 400 metres, and 1,500 metres,” he explained.

Forbes said fans can expect a full slate of activities and high-quality performances as the island’s top schools are set to compete.

“There will be a full slate of activities, and we are expecting a very good turnout because all the major teams have entered, and we expect them to be competing, and so we are expecting a day of high-class performances and some good results at the meet,” he said.

He also acknowledged the meet’s sponsors, noting that Purewater is the primary sponsor, with support coming from Hi-Lyte, Atlas Security, KFC, and several other associate sponsors.
