Fast-rising artiste Brownskin Rae is ready to make her mark in the hyper-competitive world of dancehall music.
“People keep telling me that dancehall music is very competitive and it’s hard to get a break in the business. However, I am not worried about that; I’m here to make good music and build my fan base. I’ve also been told that you have to do the same type of songs that the other female artistes are doing. I’m not trying to be anyone else. I’m Brownskin Rae, I’m creating my own style and my own brand of dancehall music,” she said.
The daughter of respected Jamaican drummer Cornel Marshall, her musical roots run deep.
“My father was one of the founding members of Third World and Zap Pow [bands]. He also toured with the Wailers Band for a while. So, while growing up, I lived in different regions of the world. I was also exposed to different cultures and an eclectic blend of music. This experience has helped to make me a versatile singer and songwriter,” said Brownskin Rae.
The singer, who lists Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Nadine Sutherland, Beyonce, and Tupac among her music influences, is currently promoting her new single titled Take Over.
“I’m the executive producer for my new single, and I’m very excited about it; it’s a top-notch production. I’m pleased with the response it has received so far. It’s getting airplay in various parts of the world, including Jamaica, the US, UK, Europe and Africa,” she said.
Brownskin Rae, given name Rachel Marshall, was born and raised in Kingston. She’s a past student of St Andrew High School for Girls, and is a certified real-estate broker and technical programmes manager.
