The HEART/NSTA Trust will launch a pilot of the Learning, Earning and Prosper (LEAP) Programme in fiscal year 2026/27, aimed at expanding pathways from tertiary education to employment.
In his contribution to the 2026/27 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday (March 19), Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, announced that students enrolled in accredited tertiary institutions will be offered opportunities for paid on the job experience.
“They will be able to engage in meaningful work in the public sector and participating private companies. As they work, they will receive a competitive part-time compensation package. LEAP is an opportunity for students to continue learning while HEART places them in employment of their choice, so they can assimilate into the workplace, earn an income and garner valuable experience,” he explained.
Dr. Holness acknowledged President of the University of the West Indies Guild of Students, Roshaun Wynter, and President of the University of Technology Students’ Union, Percival Roberts, along with their teams, for serving as the driving force behind the initiative.
“This is how my Administration makes policy. We first listen to those whom we serve, then we act collaboratively. I thank these student leaders for putting pen to paper, bringing their ideas forward, leading every step of the way and working with us to develop this programme,” the Prime Minister said.
