Michael Ricketts, president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), has confirmed the technical committee will meet today to make a recommendation on whether to offer Hubert Busby a contract extension as Reggae Girlz head coach.
Speaking with The Gleaner, Ricketts said he expects a final decision on the matter at the end of today’s meeting, with the goal of ensuring there is consistency for the Reggae Girlz.
“We had a board meeting [yesterday] and a technical meeting will be held tomorrow [today], and they will make a recommendation to the board of directors,” Ricketts confirmed.
Busby’s contract as women’s national head coach expired at the end of last year, following a 19-month stint.
In a report in The Gleaner last month, Ricketts had confirmed the JFF was reviewing Busby’s time in charge to see if he was the right fit to offer a contract extension.
“The normal process is that an assessment is to be done by the technical committee and that is being done as we speak. After which, their report will be sent to the JFF, and then based on that report, the JFF will proceed accordingly,” the JFF boss stated at the time.
“That is the story with all the national coaches. Once your contract has expired, then the technical committee does their review and then submits a report to the JFF board of directors.”
During his time in charge, Busby has overseen 13 games, recording six wins and seven defeats.
Busby’s six wins included back-to-back wins against South Africa and Peru each, alongside a 4-1 victory over Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago and a record 18-0 demolition of Dominica.
Interestingly, five of his seven defeats during his tenure came against teams ranked among the world’s top 10, falling to France, Brazil, England, and the United States.
The Girlz also improved three places in the FIFA World Rankings, moving to 39th by the end of 2025, from their position of 42nd when he was first appointed.
Speaking on Busby’s tenure, Ricketts reaffirmed his confidence in the coach’s ability as head coach and said he would have no issue with handing him an extension.
The JFF president believes Busby is the right man for the job, but said the final decision lies in the hands of the technical committee.
“From my personal perspective, I did say that I have no issues with renewing his contract, but it is the technical committee which will meet to make that recommendation.”
He added, “From my standpoint, I fully support the continuation of Busby’s tenure.”
The Reggae Girlz are chasing their third consecutive appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and have started their campaign in dominant fashion, defeating Dominica in their opening game of the Concacaf W Qualifiers.
They will next face Nicaragua in an away fixture on March 2, before playing back-to-back home games against Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana on April 10 and April 18, respectively.
The group winners will advance to the Concacaf W Championships, and compete for one of four qualifying spots to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
