The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport has introduced a biometric screening system aimed at speeding up re-entry for US citizens arriving from overseas, part of the Port Authority’s US$19-billion overhaul of the airport.
The initiative, called Enhanced Passenger Processing, uses facial-verification technology to confirm traveller identities in real time. The system, developed with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and biometric provider iProov, is designed to reduce wait times, while maintaining security standards.
Eligible travellers will not need to enrol or pay to participate, and can opt out if they prefer the traditional inspection process. CBP officials said the technology allows officers to process families and groups together, freeing resources to focus on higher-risk passengers.
The roll-out marks a milestone for the New Terminal One, an all-international facility under construction on JFK’s south side. The terminal is scheduled to open its first phase later this year, with 14 gates, and reach full completion in 2030. At 2.6 million square feet, it will be the largest terminal at JFK.
The biometric system is one of several enhancements tied to the airport’s redevelopment plan, which includes two new terminals, modernisation of existing facilities, a new ground transportation centre, and a simplified roadway network.
Marisa Von Wieding, vice-president of operations at New Terminal One, said the technology reflects the terminal’s mission to “deliver a seamless and secure journey”. CBP’s Francis Russo called the system “a commitment to innovation that strengthens border security, while improving the traveller experience”.

For travellers, the promise is shorter lines and faster clearance. For JetBlue, Delta and the international carriers slated to operate from the new facility, the upgrade is another step towards positioning JFK as a modern global gateway.
