The National Council on Education (NCE) has, to date, received more than 100 applications from individuals seeking to serve on school boards.
This was disclosed by Transforming Education for National Development (TREND) Project Lead, Dr. Venesse Morrison-Leon, during the Education Transformation Oversight Committee (ETOC) Press Conference, held at Shortwood Teachers’ College in St. Andrew on March 26.
She encouraged interested individuals to submit their applications through the online portal, accessible at https://volunteer.moey.gov.jm/apply.
Providing further updates under the governance and accountability pillar, Dr. Morrison-Leon emphasised that a key recommendation centres on strengthening the framework for school board selection.
She explained that revised governance guidelines have been developed, and the associated qualification standards are currently being piloted across Regions Three, Four, Five, Six, and Seven.
“The focus remains on putting capable individuals in place to strengthen school-level governance. The reality is, when we have strong governance in our schools, success is inevitable. So we are making sure that we improve our governance structures in our schools,” Dr. Morrison-Leon said.
In October 2024, ETOC engaged the Mona School of Business to conduct a comprehensive review of the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth, and Information.
“Our current completion level stands at 90 per cent, representing a 25 per cent increase since our last reporting period,” Dr. Morrison-Leon informed.
ETOC has been tasked with monitoring the implementation of 365 recommendations outlined in the Jamaica Education Transformation Commission (JETC) report, chaired by Professor Orlando Patterson.
The recommendations cover seven pillars of transformation – governance and accountability; early-childhood education; teaching, curriculum, and teacher training; tertiary education; technical and vocational education and training (TVET); infrastructure and technology; and finance.
