World Athletics Championships 100-metre silver medallists Tia Clayton and Kishane Thompson stole the spotlight at yesterday’s Fuller Anderson Development meet at G.C. Foster College as they warmed up for the March 20–22 World Indoor Championships scheduled for Kujawy, Poland.
Representing MVP Track Club, both athletes showed good early speed to dominate their rivals, with Clayton posting a personal best 7.02 seconds to capture the women’s 60 metres. There was also a personal best, 7.06, in the event for teammate Joniel Smith, who finished a close second. MVP athletes swept the top three spots as Natasha Morrison ended third in 7.31 seconds.
Former Edwin Allen High standout sprinter Thienna-Lee Terrelonge, who aborted her high-school career last year to go professional, made her debut, winning her heat in 7.25 seconds to finish sixth overall.
In what was a close affair, Thompson (6.52), who was out of the blocks quickly, held off the strong challenge of SprinTec’s Odaine Thompson, second in a personal best 6.52, and Uptimum Track Club and World Championships 200m bronze medallist, Bryan Levell, third in a personal best 6.54.
The outstanding former Wolmer’s Boys’ School sprinter, Gary Card, competing for the University of Technology, won his heat in 6.60 to end fourth overall.
Like they did a week ago at the Purewater/R. Danny Williams Development meet where they dominated the 100 metres, Edwin Allen High girls dominated the 200 metres, winning in three classes.
They took the quinella in Class 4 as the red-hot Monique Bogle posted a personal best 25.19 seconds to win ahead of teammate Neisha Campbell, second also in a personal best 26.13, with Phillipia Gentles of Holmwood Technical third in 26.20.
There were also wins for Edwin Allen international athletes, Kerielle Etienne of Dominica in Class 2, and Alexee Henry of Trinidad and Tobago in Class 1. Etienne clocked 24.68 to win ahead of Annastacia Hall of Holmwood (24.92) and Khalila Satchwell of Edwin Allen (24.94).
TOP OF GROUP
Following a convincing win a week ago in the 100 metres, Henry topped her Class 1 peers comfortably after posting 24.05 to win ahead of teammate Kelly-Ann Carr, second in 24.72. Third went to Rosalee Gallimore of Holmwood, in 25.11.
Earlier, Carr topped the field in the Open 400m hurdles, winning in 1:03.51.
Ferncourt High School’s outstanding sprinter, Rihanna Scott, spoiled the Edwin Allen sweep by winning Class 3 200m in 24.67. The Edwin Allen duo of Danielle Clarke (24.71) and Andrianne Pine (25.41) had to settle for second and third.
The meet started on a bright note for Alexie Palmer of Sydney Pagon High, who scored an impressive win in the Open female 3000 metres, clocking a personal best 10:52.91, relegating Chevelle Whyte (10:57.02) of Alphansus Davis and Brianna Morris (11:03.99) of Edwin Allen to second and third.
St Jago High’s Ryan Achua was also in impressive form in the Open 5000m as the Kenyan athlete raced to a personal best 15:22.72 for the win, finishing ahead of Amie Thomas and Jordan Mills of GC Foster College, second and third, respectively,, in 16:01.65 and 16:10.00.
Roneil Burke of St Jago and Micah St Michael Willis captured the Class 2 and Class 1 400m hurdles respectively. Burke won with a personal best 53.60, ending ahead of his teammate Ajani Williams, second in 55.37, with Jade McBean of Calabar third in 57.91.
Willis won Class 1 in a personal best 54.46 as Denbigh High’s Kingsley Hanson was second in a personal best 54.90, with third going to Jevaughn Rhoden of William Knibb in 56.25.
Sydney Pagon’s Luke Plummer posted a personal best to win the Class 2 800m in 1:57.22. Denbigh High’s Markland Williams, second in 1:58.27, also had a personal best, while third went to Diwayne Sharpe of Calabar in 1:58.99.
Holmwood dominated Class 1, as Lerone Stewart won in a personal best 1:57.40, ahead of teammate Tiandre Downer, second in 1:58.07, and Alejandro Palmer of Kingston College, third in 1:58.54.
Clarendon College’s Kearney Leonard captured Class 3 in 2:08.76, ahead of teammate Zadane Lewis, second in 2:08.97, and Jason Johnson of Munro College, third in 2:09.04.
