Dancehall veteran Future Fambo is experiencing some blowback in the streets since an online spat with Billboard selector Boom Boom over the gospel track, ‘ No Man No Bigger Than God’.
Future Fambo was eager to share his story with THE STAR, but Boom Boom politely declined a request for an interview. Future Fambo, who has declared himself a ‘warrior of Christ’ and defender of the gospel music, is adamant that “dancehall is the devil’s playground”.
“No culture music not playing dancehall right now. The closest that would get is gospel music, and mi hear selector seh we fi go weh wid dem soul and gospel,” he told THE STAR. Last week, Future Fambo posted a video on Instagram and tagged Boom Boom’s official page.
“It’s a crazy world we live in, I have a song, I heard a DJ say the other night some man ah come inna de dance wid dem Christian music and dem gospel music, and I want to apologise to dancehall for talking about my God and highlighting my God. I know that dancehall is the devil’s playground. When you praise and love God, everything that’s in the world that the devil controls, the money, cars, house, he will take it away from him. But no man is bigger than God,” he said in the video .
Future Fambo said that Boom Boom called him and after a talk, he deleted the post. However, he remains defiant.
“No man no bigger than God, no selector no bigger than God, no sound no bigger than God,” he said.
Future Fambo said that over the past few weeks, some selectors gave him the cold shoulder when he tried to promote his gospel tracks, despite long-standing friendships with several high-profile selectors. He added that his frustration was already mounting before the explosive post.
“When I come back in the streets and see dem nah show me love, I am not envious and mi no badmind. But mi feel like probably it’s wrong to feel [that] because me help them, they should help me. The worse thing you can have in a friendship is expectations and feelings,” he explained.
Future Fambo, christened Warren Williams, and known for the hit song Rum and Red Bull with Beenie Man, said he was tired of the “gatekeeping”.
“I am not gangster, I am a warrior of Christ. Dem can say all dem want about me, Christ has saved me. I see where He work for me and prayer work for me, so when him (Boom Boom) say gospel now, it chip mi head because once yu implicate Christ, mi head chip. Mi know say ah Christ fi him mother pray to…. him ah mi good friend,” Future Fambo said.
He said that he plans to get baptised this year and leave the devil’s playground for good.
“If we cannot highlight the name of Christ, is like something wrong mi a do, and it shock me. Christ pick me because I go through so much: stroke, heart attack, and mi almost overdose. Sean Paul send me go rehab but the rehab couldn’t save me, and mi ask Christ to lift all the drugs outta mi body, and He did it, all of the alcohol. I still drink, but I am not an excessive drinker. Alcohol is a demon, drugs is a demon, sex is a demon, but I cannot do it alone. So I ask Christ to hold my hand,” he said.
