e-Learning Jamaica Company Limited (e-LJam) is providing 4,500 laptops this academic year to strengthen computer-aided design (CAD) training in high schools and better prepare students for technical careers.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Andrew Lee, said approximately 2,000 laptops have already been delivered to schools, while a further 2,500 devices are being procured.
He explained that the devices are specifically intended to support students studying AutoCAD and other computer-aided design applications, enabling them to develop 3D modelling skills.
“These are not simple general-purpose laptops. They are intended to give our technically inclined students access to tools to be used for 3D modelling and, of course, to help really better prepare them for careers, technical careers, and of course, furthering their studies in the areas of architecture and engineering,” Mr. Lee told JIS News.
The donation forms part of the organisation’s wider efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education by ensuring that students have access to the tools needed for specialised training.
Mr. Lee said the laptops will help students build practical skills that can support further studies at universities and technical colleges.
He added that the devices will ensure high schools are equipped with dedicated technology to support CAD instruction alongside their existing computer labs.
This initiative is in keeping with the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information efforts to incorporate more Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-based learning in schools.
