A member of Fantan Mojah’s management team, Carey James, is refuting rumours that the artiste was broke at the time of his death.
“It is rumoured that Fantan was broke, but that was not so, as his estate basically covered his funeral and that was managed by his family and management team, including myself,” said James, who said he was speaking on behalf of the family.
Fantan passed away on July 14 while a patient at the University Hospital of the West Indies. He was 49. The second of two thanksgiving services, as well as the funeral rites, took place on the weekend in St Elizabeth. The first thanksgiving service was held in St Andrew. James relayed the family’s appreciation for the outpouring of love, but addressed rumours of the family receiving funding from numerous sources.
“And especially one family member is a bit concerned, because she is hearing a lot about her receiving money. She wants to clear the air and doesn’t want anyone [to] believe she got money and stole it. There was some support given to the family by close friends. Outside of that, there was no company or record label that gave anything,” James said.
He said that while close associates of Fantan made contributions, no fundraising event was held on his behalf.
“We have seen a lot of people set up GoFundMe, and all of that, but we want the public to know that the family did not do any fundraising,” he said. James said that everything was done internally, and, in cases like this, there is always going to be other support.
“The Honourable Olivia Grange (culture minister) was personally involved. and Perry’s Funeral Home had a history with him and wanted to go above and beyond, and so on,” James
