Musically, Mr Vegas considers himself a son of the 1990s, when rub-a-dub songs were the order of the day, courtesy of his heroes, including Shabba Ranks.
As a producer, the deejay tries to replicate sounds from that era, which can be heard on the Open Land Riddim, a seven-song EP that he co-produced for his MV Music label with Kisko Hype.
“I want to capture di sound of di ’90s, when all those monster dancehall hits were created; di sound of Steely and Clevie, Dave Kelly, Tony Kelly, Danny Browne and Main Street,” Mr Vegas explained. He has two songs on the project – Another Blessing and Global Gallis. The other vocal songs are Luv by Kisko Hype, G od’s Favorite by Konshens, Body Language by Nigy Boy, and Summer High by Mali Alii.
For Mr Vegas, working with like-minded artistes is important.
“It is always my desire to produce authentic dancehall, to make hit records that can play worldwide. Therefore, I look for artistes who are talented and able to sing on a dancehall beat. Subsequent to that, I teamed-up with Kisko Hype, who has the same vision, and we created the riddim,” he said.
Known for hits such as Heads High, I Am Blessed and Do You Know, Mr Vegas has been producing songs for over 30 years. His first production was One Up by Pan Head.
