Recording artiste Ny-Robii has no shortage of confidence when it comes to his musical abilities.
In fact, after years of honing his craft, writing songs and experimenting with different sounds, the St Thomas-born entertainer believes he now has all the tools needed to make his mark.
“I’m feeling superb and proud of myself. I know I mastered the art because I can deejay, singjay and sing on any riddim — trap, dancehall or reggae,” he said. But while Ny-Robii is determined to make his own name count, some dancehall fans may already be familiar with his work without even knowing it.
Before stepping forward as a recording artiste, the entertainer, whose given name is Dowayne J Morrison, flexed his songwriting muscles behind the scenes. Then known as Priceless, he contributed to several songs recorded by dancehall artiste Pamputtae, including Good Good, Stop It and Good Gold.
Now living on Long Island’s East End in the Hamptons, Ny-Robii is focused on moving from behind the pen and putting his own voice front and centre. For the artiste, the transition has also been about becoming more confident in who he is.
“My expectation as an artiste is to be unique, different, be professional, release quality music consistently, and please my audience to the best of my ability,” he said. That desire to stand apart is also reflected in his sound. Ny-Robii describes himself as a versatile lyricist and vocalist who uses storytelling as one of his strongest weapons.
He has even given his creative zone a name — the ‘flow state’. It is there, he said, that he feels most unrestricted musically and is able to explore different topics, concepts and styles.
Ny-Robii officially introduced his current moniker with the release of Clowny in 2019, and followed up with his seven-track EP, Welcome to Ny-Bration in October 2021. His visual catalogue has also attracted attention. The video for Destiny, which was released in 2022, has amassed more than 168,000 views on Vevo, while Going Crazy has racked up more than 205,000 views.
His latest single, Flight, represents another step in a journey the artiste says has required patience, self-belief and constant improvement. Those lessons have become just as important to Ny-Robii as the music itself. The entertainer believes circumstances should never be allowed to dictate how far someone can go, and says learning to believe in himself has played a major role in the person and artiste he is becoming. It is a mindset he hopes will also inspire persons who may feel limited by where they are starting from.
While major festivals are on his wish list, his ultimate goal is much bigger – Ny-Robii wants to become a household name, and he is not shy about saying he wants his career to eventually earn him recognition as a music icon and legend.
