KINGSTON, Jamaica -Jamaica’s Ojay Shields has made his debut for the West Indies in the first test match now underway in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Shields was denied his first wicket after he beat the bat of the veteran Kane Williamson and crashed into his off stump, but the delivery was called no ball.

Shields’ childhood ambition of representing the West Indies at the highest level has now been realised. For Shields, a 29-year-old pace bowler from the parish of Manchester, the journey to the cusp of a West Indies cap has been anything but conventional.

Just six months ago, with age becoming a factor, Shields seriously contemplated retirement. But a call from West Indies head coach Daren Sammy was life-changing for the cricketer.
