Dancehall artiste Sita Lyrical is celebrating the growing presence of women in the genre, while calling for female artistes to receive greater recognition for their work.

She says the increased attention is encouraging, but believes the industry should do more to ensure that female dancehall artistes are valued for their musical talent and contributions.

“I love the fact that female dancehall artistes are getting attention, but hate what they have to go through to gain it,” Sita Lyrical said.

She reasoned that many female entertainers are attracting attention based on “social media toxicity” and posited that no one cares about a female talent “unless she demoralises herself”.

“The field is very male-dominated and still doesn’t promote female artistes as willingly and easily as they do [male artistes],” Sita Lyrical said.

Sita Lyrical is steadily building her profile in dancehall, delivering a string of lyrically packed tracks complemented by polished visuals.

Her latest release, Face Card, celebrates female beauty, femininity and confidence, while encouraging women to embrace self-acceptance and individuality. The track also gives Sita Lyrical another opportunity to showcase her lyrical prowess and versatility as an artiste.

Released through Wraif Music, the single, according to Sita Lyrical, was inspired by the need to celebrate and promote confidence.

“The single was born from the need for confidence to be constantly celebrated and promoted. It promotes independence, self-worth and body positivity, while not straying for the raw dancehall energy and lyricism that has come to be expected of me.”

The accompanying official music video has already racked up thousands of views, and Sita Lyrical believes the track has the potential to break into international markets with the right promotional push.

“The response to this track has been tremendous and with continued promotion, it has the ability to become an anthem for ladies worldwide. I am confident that this song will definitely earn a spot as one of my performance tracks, because the females are loving it so far and are using the sound on social platforms. I believe the rapid growth of the track is due to its relatability and its confidence-boosting energy,” said Sita Lyrical.

The early success of Face Card comes as no surprise to producer Alfa Wraif, who credits Sita Lyrical’s songwriting ability and strong delivery for helping the track stand out.

“Sita Lyrical has a different style and approach to music, she’s very lyrically inclined and grasps the art of storytelling very well,” Wraif. said.

“She made sure that each line had a punch, something to make you think; every verse was basically a progression from the first one and I respect that quality in an artiste,” he added.
