Students of St. Mary Technical High School explored a wide range of career opportunities during a Career Day Expo, held at the institution on March 25.
The event adopted a multidimensional approach, bringing together professionals from diverse fields who engaged students through presentations, discussions, and interactive sessions designed to help them make informed decisions about their future careers.
Vice Principal, Orville Jones, underscored the importance of early career planning and exposure in shaping students’ future success.
“Our primary goal for career day at St. Mary Technical High School is to expose, motivate and to guide our students into making wise career choices from a more informed position. They [walked] away with more knowledge, becoming more aware of career choices and options that are available to them.” he said.
Guidance Counsellor, Garfield Byfield, highlighted the role of such initiatives in shaping students’ aspirations and broadening their understanding of the world of work.
“We [had] about 30 exhibitors… and they [came] out in their numbers. The students [were] out as well. We [saw] them participating and signing up. We know that, eventually, we’ll see some going on to Mico [University College], some going on to Shortwood [Teachers’ College], G.C. [Foster College of Physical Education and Sport]…[and] HEART [NSTA Trust],” he stated.
Dean of Discipline, Ryan Hewitt, noted that the event was aligned with the school’s curriculum and tailored to students’ areas of specialisation.
“We invited different stakeholders to make specific presentations to our pool of students, according to their specialisation,” he stated.
Mr. Hewitt further indicated that stakeholders were selected based on subject areas such as Business, Science and Engineering, to bolster the event’s multidimensional approach.
During the event, students interacted directly with representatives from industries such as healthcare, education, business, and technology, gaining first-hand insights into the qualifications and skills required for various professions.
“The knowledge gained from the presenters… will assist them in determining the career path that they desire,” Mr. Hewitt stated.
Prefect, form captain, star achiever and peer mentor, Dashawn Forrester, expressed his appreciation for the exposure gained during the event.
“For me, personally, I think this was a good experience… [for] the younger generation,” he shared, noting that it will aid them in determining their careers.
